Happy Emancipation Day!

Emancipation Day is a national holiday that is observed annually on the first Monday in August throughout the West Indies. It was originally intended to commemorate the emancipation of slaves throughout the British Empire on 1 August 1834. However, like most purportedly solemn holidays, it has evolved into nothing more than a national excuse to dance in the streets (Junkanoo “Feel the Rush” parade) and go to the beach.

Not that I’m complaining mind you. After all, growing up in The Bahamas, no one relished Emancipation Day (a.k.a. August Monday) more for fun than solemnity than I did. And, even as I hope this post reminds fellow islanders of its origin, I enthusiastically endorse the festive spirit with which we celebrate our freedom.

So, here below are some pictures of the revelry we indulge in to mark this solemn occasion. Of course, to me they are delightfully nostalgic and only make me jealous of the fun they're having today – as I slave away at work in America....

UPDATE (9:00 pm): After reading my lament about slaving away in America while they were reveling in Emancipation Day fun in The Bahamas, my darling niece Maurie (below in camouflage hat and shirt standing with little sister Mauria and brother Maurice Jr. to her right) decided to exacerbate my jealousy by sending me these personal photos of them cruising the Junkanoo yesterday and lounging at the beach today.

Thanks Maurie, Uncle Anthony loves you too....

Happy Emancipation Day!

NOTE: Today, Jamaicans are also celebrating their 44th Independence Day. (Although yesterday, August 6, was the official date.) It is noteworthy that Jamaicans were the first West Indians to stand up for their independence from Britain in 1962.

Therefore, to our pioneering brothers and sisters:

Happy Independence Day Jamaica!
