The judge just sentenced Casey to four one-year sentences, to be served consecutively, as well as a $1,000.00 fine for each of the four counts of lying to law enforcement authorities. After noting that she’s entitled to time served (of almost three years), he indicated that Casey will have to remain in jail until July 17.
(In fact, concern for her safety is such that she will probably be released at an undisclosed time over the next 10 days.)
But, given that her critics wanted to see her executed, the fact that she was not allowed to walk out of jail today (as virtually every legal expert predicted) must come as little consolation.
Even more galling to them of course is the fact that Casey now stands to make millions from movie, book, interview and other deals. Never mind reports that the state intends to sue her to recoup millions wasted on a “wild goose chase” looking for Caylee because of the lies she told.
But I submit that her expected crime-pays windfall says far more about the depraved and enabling interests of the American people than it does about the depraved and mercenary motivations of this de facto child murderer.
Finally, much is being made of the vampish way Casey appeared in court today – preening as if she were planning not only to walk out of jail today but to sashay right into a night club.
Therefore, this seems an appropriate time to share my abiding suspicion that there’s much more going on between defense attorney Jose Baez and Casey than an attorney-client relationship. In fact it would not surprise me in the least if she spends her first night of freedom in his bed. Well, he did save her life….
