Washington Capitals Defeat Vegas Golden Knights for Hockey Stanley Cup

After a nail-biter of a finale, the Stanley Cup is coming to Washington for the first time in the Capitals’ 44 seasons. From captain Alex Ovechkin’s gaptoothed grin in Las Vegas to the thousands of delirious fans in downtown Washington, the moment encapsulated years of disappointment, hurt and anticipation — all of it corked, shaken and unleashed.

I readily admit that I am no Hockey fan. But this is all about civic pride. Not to mention that it marks the first national championship for any Washington sports team since 1992, when the Redskins won the Super Bowl.

This is why everyone who lives and works in the Washington metro area is beaming today.
