According to NASA, the first solar eclipse was in 3340 BCE. But wearing “eclipse glasses” is a recent safety precaution, dating back only to the 1970s.
Therefore, that first eclipse, and others throughout the “dark ages,” must have caused a high incidence of “eclipse blindness.” Given that experience, you have to wonder why our eyes didn’t evolve to look directly at the sun during an eclipse.
That said, I experienced “totality” in 2017. And, truth be told, the craze surrounding this “celestial event” completely escapes me.
