I am going canoeing to be at one with nature, while meditating on the requirements for a purposeful life.
But cultural brainwashing is such that you’d be forgiven for commemorating this solemn occasion by going shopping or to the beach.
Still, remember to honor the troops whose “ultimate sacrifice” made this perverse holiday possible. And don’t forget to curse the politicians who made dead heroes of so many of them for vainglorious causes like the unjust (and patently unwinnable) wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria …
NOTE: Not since 1968 has America entered a summer fraught with such simmering and combustible tensions. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, I suggest you tune in to CNN’s re-airing of its four-part series “1968” beginning Sunday night. Beware!
