On Sunday, to the relief of sensible people everywhere, Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign and endorsed Kamala Harris to carry the presidential torch.
In fact, how’s this for “divine intervention”:
- I’ll see your Trump escaping an assassin’s bullet by the skin of his ear and raise you Biden putting country above himself by withdrawing from the race.
Biden’s epic act of patriotism could not have been more timely, coming just days before Friday’s Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was as if Biden timed it as the pivotal scene before intermission in a modern Shakespearean play. Indeed, events have conspired so that nothing in his political career will have become him quite like ending it.
You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who welcomes this intermission more than I do. Because, when it comes to fanboying the Olympics, even super fans Snoop Dogg and Leslie Jones are no competition for me. And I can’t thank Biden and Harris enough for freeing my mind to take it all in – free of political distress.
Regular readers of my blog know that I not only watch but also comment on every event, including archery and curling. Democrats forced Biden to realize he’s too old to continue running for reelection. But nobody has to force me to realize I’m too old to continue watching and commenting (here in long form) on Olympic events.
So, I plan to suspend posting commentaries here until Monday, August 19 — Day 1 of the Democratic National Convention.
It’s not quite NBC, but I’ll be giving Snoop and Leslie a run for their money with Olympic snark on social media (Threads and Facebook). Perhaps I’ll see you there, or back here on August 19.
Let the Games begin!
