Weiner’s Ballsy Run for Mayor of New York City

Written by Anthony L. Hall

If these politicians were not lead vocals in a chorus of moral crusaders, I would not give their sexual escapades a moment’s thought. For the unadulterated pleasure of afflicting these hypocrites, however, I don’t even mind being bedfellows with a publicity-seeking hustler like Larry Flynt.

(“DC Madam outs Sen. David Vitter as a faithful ‘John,’ The iPINIONS Journal, July 17, 2007)

originalThere is, of course, a rogue’s gallery of conservative Republicans who have been caught with their pants down – having extra-marital affairs after politicking about Christian family values. But unlike them, liberal Democratic firebrand Anthony Weiner never uttered a word about family values to win a single vote.

This is why I have not bothered to join in the orgy of commentary on his sexual escapades, which amounted to nothing more than sending political groupies pictures of his penis (aka sexting) to show how excited he was to have their personal support. It suffices that this scandal caused him to lose his seat in Congress last year, and has reduced his campaign for mayor of New York City to a farcical sideshow this year.

Frankly, as sex scandals go, this is clearly G-Rated. The problem for Weiner (46) is that he has fallen into the oldest political flytrap in politics: getting into big trouble by trying to cover up little indiscretions.

For the only thing truly newsworthy about this story is his claim that his account was hacked: If it was, this really is a federal case. If it wasn’t, he’s risking both criminal prosecution and political death for making a false claim.

(“Rep. Anthony Weiner’s Prickly Situation,” The iPINIONS Journal, June 3, 2011)

imagesStill, all things considered, this Weiner has some balls running for mayor. To be fair, though, most voters will ignore him on Election Day – not as much for being a sexting fiend as for being a pathological liar about his sexting addiction.

For the record, if I were a New Yorker, I would cast my ballot for Christine Quinn, the current Speaker of the City Council, to become the first female, as well as the first (openly) gay, mayor of New York City.  (Sorry Ed.)
