Super Tuesday: A Biden Shocker

Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 7:17 AM
Written by Anthony L. Hall

By now, you’re probably aware that Joe Biden shocked the political world with his performance in yesterday’s Super Tuesday primaries.

Joe Biden dominated across the South on Tuesday and scored a dramatic upset victory in Texas while surprising in Minnesota and Massachusetts, roaring into contention in a Democratic presidential primary that increasingly looks like a two-way race between the former vice president and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Biden ended the night with nine wins and still locked in a tight race in Maine — another state he’d ignored — that could make 10.

(CNN, March 4, 2020)

Sanders is hoping outstanding votes in California will redeem his day. But that seems unlikely.

In any event, this shock sounded a clarion call for every pundit worth his salt to chime in. I appreciate that.

But here is what I wrote over a year ago in “Biden-Harris 2020: That’s the Ticket!” January 14, 2019:

As I did last election cycle, I will not be commenting on the horse race. This, notwithstanding that it will dominate public discourse over the next 18 months. …

Trump fluttered in like a black-swan in 2016 and pooped all over Hillary – who was my pick. But it would take an even rarer phenomenon either for him to get re-elected or for any Republican to win in 2020. Such is the reputational damage Trump has done to that party’s (and to this country’s) brand.
