‘Butch’ Kerzner of The Atlantis Resorts Is Dead…

A charmed life does not mean a long life

Butch Kerzner was the CEO of Kerzner International Holdings. Those holdings include the Atlantis Hotel and Casino on Paradise Island, The Bahamas. It is an iconic and pioneering resort. This is why Kerzner’s sudden death on Wednesday left Bahamians in shock.

His father Sol is more famous. But Butch was more hands on. I know from mutual friends that he was extremely personable and engaging. He was a shrewd and savvy businessman. And he could have abused his power as the biggest private investor in The Bahamas. But he never did.

Instead, he harmonized his business activities with the political agenda of the country. This endeared him to Bahamian leaders on both sides of the political divide. Prime Minister Perry Christie said

This is a sad moment for our nation.

(Caribbean Net News, October 12, 2006)

Given his international holdings, leaders around the world are mourning Kerzner’s death. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May his memory be a blessing.

It happened right in front of my house, this guy came here to help our island grow, so we really feel deeply sorry about his loss. I wish his father will bear the grief with dignity, for this is hard.
