Run Condi Run!
The Washington rumour mill was spinning at warp speed last night when word got out that Condoleezza Rice gave the clearest indication yet that she’s preparing for a 2008 presidential contest against Hillary Clinton.
In an interview with the Washington Times, Dr. Rice expressed deftly nuanced views on controversial issues like affirmative action and abortion which reflect more the positions of centrist (Colin Powell) Republicans than those of Christian conservatives like President Bush. Of course, in staking claim to this more appealing terrain on the political spectrum, Condi effectively check-mates the newly fashioned (centrist) positions recently articulated by her likely Democratic opponent.
Indeed, a presidential race between these two remarkable women would incite such polarised political passions that it would surely guarantee the most dynamic campaign and highest voter turn-out in American history.
But here are a couple provocative questions to consider:
Will Condi’s centrist strategy alienate conservative Republicans who Karl Rove credits most for Bush’s reelection? And,
Will Condi’s race matter more than her Party affiliation, so that, ultimately, most white Republicans end-up voting for Hillary and black Democrats end-up voting for Condi?
